Springfield City Council votes against gas tax

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A group of local citizens are recommending Champaign's mayor and city council members get pay raises.

The council-appointed task force made up of area residents think there should be $500 pay bumps, the News Gazette said.

They think council members should be paid $5,500 a year, and the mayor's salary should come up to $35,500.

The mayor's salary would raise for travel expenses.

The task force is recommending the pay bumps take effect in 2021.

The News Gazette reports Urbana City Council members voted to give themselves $100 raises for each of the next four years.
