Teacher jumps into action during Mattoon High School shooting

MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - One person is in custody after a shooting at Mattoon High School that wounded one person on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called to Mattoon High School at 11:32 a.m. for shots fired in the school cafeteria.  According to police, they believe a student, is responsible for the shooting, and acted alone.  Police also say a student was injured, and that the victim's father reports that he is in good spirits, and stable condition.

Mattoon police say a teacher "overwhelmed" the student and stopped the shooting, and that a school resource officer took the suspect into custody.  A lock down was lifted just after 1 p.m.

Police also commended the teacher's actions, saying her efforts potentially saved many lives.

Over 200 police officers responded to the scene, including Charleston Police Department, Mattoon Police Department, Eastern Illinois University Police and Illinois State Police.  Neighbors tell WAND-TV that the police response was "very quick" and "very organized."

Parents were asked to pick their children up at Riddle Elementary School and the Salvation Army.

In a news conference, officers announced that Mattoon High School will have early dismissal on Thursday, and that any parent who wishes to keep their student home from school on Thursday will be given an excused absence.  Additionally, students will be able to speak with counselors should they need extra support.

Community members gathered at the Fields Church in Mattoon to offer prayers and comfort each other.  Church officials say this event is something they needed to do for the community.
