(WAND) - The United States Navy turns 250 years old Monday, October 13.Â
The Navy was established in 1775 by the Continental Congress to create a small fleet to fight the British Navy and help with the American Revolution.Â
Since then, the Navy has played a critical role throughout our nation's history, participating in conflicts and actions across the globe.Â
A large celebration, Homecoming 250, is being held in Philadelphia and Camden County, New Jersey, through October 16. The event features events like ship tours, a birthday parade, and flag-raising ceremonies.Â
The Navy's 250th is part of a larger celebration leading up to the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026.Â
The Navy launched a dedicated website to mark the milestone year. You can visit the website here. The Navy is also encouraging people to use the hashtag #Navy250 in social media posts.Â
