Urbana man convicted of murdering his neighbor in 2022

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A man has been convicted of a murder in 2022 in Champaign.

Matthew Denbo of Urbana was convicted of first-degree murder by a judge. Denbo was charged in the death of his neighbor, Joshua E. Berg, 46, of Urbana, who was shot and killed July 15, 2022, in Champaign.

The shooting happened in the 200 Block of E. Green Street.

Champaign Police said Berg was walking eastbound in the 200-block of East Green Street with Matthew Denbo, 42, of Urbana, when an argument ensued.

Police believe the argument rapidly escalated, with Denbo firing a gun at the Berg. Following the shooting, Denbo left the area but was quickly located by officers and arrested for Murder.

Denbo now faces 45 years in prison after turning down a plea deal earlier this year that would have given him 25 years. He will be sentenced by a judge in October.
