(WAND) — As the holiday season approaches and online shopping intensifies, the United States Postal Service (USPS) said it is ready to handle the expected package and mail delivery surge.

As of Friday afternoon, USPS accepted 6,173,281,000 mail and packages this holiday season.

"This is our season," said Tim Norman, USPS Strategic Communications for Illinois Districts.

To ensure packages make it under the tree in time for Christmas, USPS reminded customers of the holiday delivery deadlines.

"We are delivering for America," said Norman. "For the employees, this is their season and they take it very seriously."
