PEORIA, Ill. (WAND) - Day three of the Sean Grayson Murder Trial started Wednesday morning with opening statements in a full courtroom in Peoria.
Jurors were seated on Monday, but there was no trial activity Tuesday except for a hearing on several motions and evidentiary procedures.
Grayson is charged with first-degree murder in the police shooting death of Sonya Massey inside her Sangamon County home in July 2024. The trial was moved to Peoria due to media attention.Â
Grayson, a now former Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy, shot and killed Massey after she called 911 to report a prowler. The incident was captured on police body camera video.Â
The court released on Wednesday the full list of witnesses the State is expected to call to testify. Their time on the stand will offer insight into key pieces of evidence and testimony about what happened.

A list has not been provided of possible witnesses for the defense.

Massey, an unarmed Black woman, was 36 years old when she died. Her death sparked protests, calls for justice, and impacted change across the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department and other Sangamon County offices.Â
