MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - A woman in Mattoon escaped a house fire early Friday morning by climbing out of her bedroom window.

The Mattoon Fire Department was called to a house fire in the 3500 block of Willow Drive just before 3 a.m.

Firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the front of the single-story home. The fire had also spread into the attic space.

Neighbors told MFD the homeowner was able to escape from her bedroom through a window. No one was injured.

The fire was put out within 15 minutes. The home received smoke damage throughout, with fire and water damage to the bedroom/office, bathroom, and spare bedroom. The home is considered uninhabitable until repairs can be made.

The homeowner is getting help from the Red Cross.

The Mattoon Fire Department is reminding people to sleep with your bedroom door closed and maintain working smoke and CO detectors. With the bedroom door being closed at this incident, it allowed enough time for the woman to escape uninjured.
