A Chicago teen who spoke out for her father’s release after he was detained last fall by immigration officials has died after battling a rare form of cancer. The family says 16-year-old Ofelia Giselle Torres Hidalgo died Friday. She had been diagnosed in December 2024 with the aggressive form of soft tissue cancer and had been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The family's statement says an immigration judge ruled three days before Ofelia’s death that her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, was conditionally entitled to receive “cancellation of removal” due to the hardships his deportation would cause his children born in the United States. The children are U.S. citizens.
A young cancer patient at one of the remaining New York City hospitals where nurses are on strike says he misses his regular caregivers. Logan Coyle is a 9-year-old boy battling advanced liver cancer at NewYork-Presbyterian’s children’s hospital in Manhattan. Two other major hospital systems reached tentative deals to end the strike on Monday. Those proposals, if approved by union members, would see nurses return to work by Saturday. Negotiations at NewYork Presbyterian have progressed slower. The hospital says it has agreed to a proposal from mediators that includes many things the union has sought. But the union says there are no plans yet for negotiations to resume.
Some cancer patients are hitting coverage limits on a cheap anti-nausea pill that can ward off waves of vomiting after treatment. Doctors say restrictions on the number of tablets can hurt care. Pharmacy benefit managers say their restrictions guard against overuse. In between sits patients. They may have to ration pills or opt for less-effective help. The conflict offers a glimpse at how relatively simple acts of care can grow complex in the fragmented U.S. health care system.
