CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The Illinois Women's Basketball team prepares to welcome the Illinois State Redbirds to State Farm Center this weekend.
Both teams are 1-0 entering Sunday's matchup. Illinois won its season opener 91-67 against SEMO. Forward Berry Wallace scored 27 points in the game, the most in an opener since Genesis Bryant scored 28 at Rutgers in January 2025, per Illinois Athletics.
Illinois State beat the Dayton Flyers 87-76, as the Redbird starters combined for 74 of the team's 87 points. ISU is coming off a 24-13 season, good for fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference. The team even advanced to the Fab Four of the WNIT, falling just short of a championship appearance after losing 99-96 to Troy.
The Illini have lost its last two against ISU, yet hold a slight advantage in the all-time series with a 21-16 record. Illinois and Illinois State last squared off in 2019, when the Redbirds crushed their in-state rival 74-58 in Champaign.
