DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The beaver moon, November's full moon is on display tonight and Wednesday night. Despite some high clouds wafting across the state, this moon is upwards of 30% brighter than a typical full moon. The reason? It's a supermoon. The second of three consecutive supermoons to end 2025.
A supermoon occurs when the moon's orbit, which is shaped like an egg, is closest to Earth. We call that the perigee. When the moon is farthest away from Earth, it is an apogee. This supermoon will also appear up to 14% larger than your typical full moon.
This full moon also goes by the names: digging moon, deer rutting moon, frost moon and whitefish moon.
Gusty winds between 20 and 30 mph will continue for a large part of tonight before they begin to diminish Wednesday night. So, while tonight is milder and windy, Wednesday night will be colder and less windy.
Take your pick, or view the moon on both occasions, and enjoy!
Thanks to Cathryn for tonight's picture.
