DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Remember the last time you stepped out of the pool?  It got chilly, right?  That's because the water on your skin was evaporating.

Evaporation is when a liquid (water) turns into gas (vapor).  This is an endothermic process that allows a chemical reaction where heat is absorbed from its surroundings.  This results in an overall decrease in temperature of the immediate environment (your skin).    In other words, as water evaporates on your skin, you feel cooler.

This is exactly what was going on with the corridor of rain running west to east from Kansas into Missouri and Illinois.   Temperatures were struggling in the 50s and 60s due to evaporation.  Farther northwest it was in the 70s with no rain.

This 70+ degree air will arrive in time for the first half of Mother's Day weekend.  We'll just have to burn off some fog early in the morning.   Cooler weather returns on Sunday, Mother's Day but most of it looks rain-free.  Not all; most.

Happy Mother's Day!

Stay weather aware.
