DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Many of us have gardens with a variety of vegetables and plants, but do you know how much water they need to thrive?

Most gardens need about an inch of water every week. It's also best to have this one inch delivered in two to three doses throughout the week. Short bursts of water every day do not encourage strong, deep roots.

Hot and windy weather can lead to increased evaporation, so it is possible that more than an inch of water is needed per week. The easiest way to tell if your garden needs water is to stick your finger into the soil about two inches deep.  If you run into dry soil, it's time to water. If it's moist, it's best to wait.

Also, keep in mind Mother Nature. Some free water is headed our way in the form of showers and thunderstorms, most of which should occur Wednesday evening through the first half of Thursday.

Stay safe, stay sweaty and stay weather-aware.
