DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A couple of heavy to severe storms rumbled across the area earlier today. However, most of us escaped the severe potential.

Why?

Dry air entrainment.

The parent storm that brought the tropical warm front back across Illinois early this morning moved away from Iowa into Wisconsin. Since the center of this storm was moving farther away from our region, enough dry air aloft over Missouri was pulled into the southern flank of the storm. This prevented most storms from growing vertically enough to reach severe limits.

Another parent storm, currently over the Inter-Mountain West, will arrive Friday night. Additional thunderstorms will develop ahead of this feature on Friday afternoon. Severe weather may take another swipe at us Friday night as a cold front associated with this storm arrives.

It'll once again be best to stay safe and stay weather-aware.
