FORSYTH, Ill. (WAND) — Hundreds of community members and dozens of first responders took to the Forsyth Park baseball diamond to celebrate the inaugural Officer Chris Oberheim Baseball Memorial Tournament.
This tournament is dedicated to Officer Chris Oberheim, who was killed in the line of duty on May 19, 2021.
Hosted by Kelsey Washburn, the niece of Officer Oberheim, and her husband, Wyatt Washburn, the tournament honors Chris' love for being at the ball diamonds while raising funds for Concerns of Police Survivors, Illinois Chapter (IL COPS). This organization provides essential support to families of fallen officers.
Kelsey Washburn said that after months of plannng, it was fufilling to see the community show up in such a huge way. "Its overwhelming, I mean, it gives me goosebumps. It's just amazing the communities response to all of this, and their support." Washburn said.
