URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — Common Ground Food Co-Op is a food cooperative owned by more than 14,000 households in the community. By investing $60, you can become a part-owner of Common Ground.
As an owner, new opportunities include 10% off groceries, extra discounts on specially discounted items, the ability to run and vote for the executive board and the ability to nominate non-profits for the Co-Op to fund.
Common Ground Marketing Manager Sarah Buckman said the cost of equity is put back into the community.
"We focus on our local food system, working with more than 70 local farms within 100 miles of our store," Buckman said.
It also has special financial assistance programs, such as a "Food For All" program, which is open to low-income shoppers. It is community-funded, which allows shoppers to waive the $60 membership fee. Owners under the "Food for All" Program also get 10% off produce and basic staple items.
It also has a LINK Match program, giving LINK shoppers up to $25 in vouchers when they buy from Common Ground.
"Since we've started that program, we've surpassed $180,000 given away through this grant program. The amazing kicker is that it also supports our local farms." Buckman said.
Students also get a 10% discount on Sundays.
However, you do not need to be an owner to shop there. The Co-Op is focused on supporting local farmers while providing fresh, locally-grown food to customers.
"One thing I really love about Champaign-Urbana is just the interest in supporting each other and supporting local vendors and farmers," Buckman explained. "Common Ground is really committed to our local farmers and producers."
