DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Decatur will be flushing and flow testing around 1,200 fire hydrants in April.
The process will be completed by fire department and water department crews Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. when possible.
Fire crews will be checking for operational deficiencies, lubricating discharge outlets, and recording flow data. The city said this upkeep is essential to keeping Decatur's 4,500 fire hydrants ready to use.
Some discoloration may happen in areas where the hydrants are being tested. No health issues are associated with the discoloration, but residents should wait until the water runs clear to do laundry. The city said that any stains caused by this process can be removed by rewashing wet laundry with a rust-removing compound.
A map showing testing areas will be uploaded on the city of Decatur's website here: decaturil.gov/299/Maps
