SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Dozens of community members gathered at the Oak Ridge Cemetery over the weekend for a solemn Veteran's Memorial Vigil.
From veterans to gold star families, people came together to remember the fallen and reflect on their sacrifice.
"I ask that you remember and sacrifice some suffering endured by their families and loved ones," said a gold star family member.
Bud Yoakum, one of the vigil organizers, said more than 2,000 Illinoisans died in the Vietnam War.Â
"These names on this wall are a person. It's not just a name. These people paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms that we have today," said Yoakum.
Yoakum served in the United States Navy and did three different tours in Vietnam. He said the vigil holds a special place in his heart.
The memorial display remained in place for 24 hours before the closing ceremony Sunday. Organizers said honoring fallen soldiers is not just a moment, but a commitment.
