(WAND) - The Fourth of July is exciting for most Americans, but can be a traumatic experience for pets.Â
According to the American Humane Society, July 5 is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters, considering many pets go missing on the holiday.Â
The main goal is to leave your pets at home during the fireworks display, while shielding them from the loud, scary noises outside.
Be sure that your pet's ID tags are up to date so that in case they manage to run off to safety, people will already have your contact information on hand.
If you plan on staying home with them, act calm to the best of your abilities, even if it sounds like a war zone outside. Pets look to their owners to see how they are reacting, so put on a brave face and do not overreact to the festivities outside.
Lastly, consult with your veterinarian regarding medication to help with your pet's stress.Â
