MAHOMET, Ill. (WAND) — Mahomet-Seymour Junior High will have students build beds for children in need after receiving a $1,000 grant from the Illinois Education Association Foundation.

Jennifer Smith, a science teacher at the school, applied for the grant as part of the IEA's Schools and Community Outreach by Educators program. It is a grant program that lets teachers apply for money for a service project.

The service program Smith chose is a bed building day in partnership with the Mahomet chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

6th graders at the school will get to learn about the science involved in construction while building beds that will be donated to children in the community.

They will also be collecting stuffed animals to donate with the beds.

The students will build the beds on the morning of Monday, May 12.
