DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — During National Foster Care Month, Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois (LCFS) has shined a light on the everyday heroes who open their homes to children in need — while sounding the alarm about a growing shortage of foster families across the state.
Each May, LCFS recognizes foster families for their life-changing impact, and this year is no different. The organization is celebrating people who step up to offer not just shelter, but stability, compassion, and a place to call home.
"Behind every statistic is a child with a story — and a dream for a better future," said Mike Bertrand, President and CEO of LCFS. "Foster families don't just provide shelter; they offer hope, healing, and a sense of belonging that can transform a child's life forever."
According to LCFS, more than 18,000 children are currently in Illinois' foster care system. The need is especially critical for older youth, siblings, and children with complex emotional or medical needs. Without enough qualified foster homes, children may face separation from siblings or experience long delays in finding a family that can meet their needs.
"Every teenager deserves a home where they feel seen. Every sibling deserves to grow up with their brother or sister. Every child deserves to know they are valued," Bertrand emphasized. "We need more people willing to step into these children's lives and say, 'I'm here for you.'"
