CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A public meeting is set to take place to review the Champaign Postal Service Processing Plant.Â
The postal service is doing a review of the processing and distribution center on the city's northwest side.Â
They are considering transferring some assigned operations to other offices which includes simplifying process and standardized layouts.Â
A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. at the University YMCA in Champaign.Â
This comes after dozens of people expressed their concerns at a public meeting in the beginning of February.Â
Members say the proposal would make mail that is processed at that Champaign location to be sent to Chicago to be processed, then would come back.Â
That means it could take longer to get mail to your home.Â
President of Independent Media Center Urbana-Champaign Augustus Wood added, "You'll have a lot of people that lose jobs. They lose access. They have to get more transportation to go to places to get mail or to go to get jobs. It really just disrupts the lives of residents in the area."Â
APWU Local 692 President Brian Cunningham said, "What ends up happening is, with all your mail being shipped to Chicago... They say there's not going to be delays, but there's no way you're going to ship all that mail from over a quarter of the state or half the state and get it back in one day or two days."Â
Officials are going to hold a rally at 5 p.m. on the quad of the U of I campus leading up to Tuesday's 6 p.m. meeting.Â
