(WAND) — With Halloween just days away, it's important to factor in safety when planning for the Big Night.Â
Jayce Eustice with the Red Cross said that making sure you remain visible is vital, especially after it gets dark. "If there's reflective tape, if there's any sort of lights that you can add to any costumes, or also just making sure you're wearing those lighter clothing...we know sometimes that can be unavoidable, but it's just important that if you are out and about at night, it's important that you are being able to be seen." explained Eustice.
Decatur Fire department Fire Inspector Matt Jones said that it is also important to keep fire safety in mind on Halloween. "A lot of people still like to use candles for, decorations, and we just recommend staying clear of the flame, with your costume."
Tips Before Halloween:
- Avoid costumes with trailing fabric.
- Make sure children are able to properly see if wearing a mask.
- Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags or opt for light-colored clothing.
- Keep decorations away from all open flames and heat sources like light bulbs.
Tips for Trick or Treating:
- A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children.
- Bring a flashlight to increase visibility on the streets and on lawns.
- Only go to homes with porch lights on, and never enter a home or car for treats.
- Remain on well-lit streets and use sidewalks. if there are not sidewalks, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.
- When trick-or-treating, do not assume the right of way.
- Stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them.
Even if you aren't trick-or-treating, it is still important to be aware of your surroundings. "If you happen to be driving around on Halloween evening, just make sure that you're taking the extra time in order to be safe" explained Eustice. "There's going to be families and kids that are out there in the neighborhood."
