CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Stephens Family YMCA in Champaign is celebrating five years of its "Y on the Fly" community outreach program.

Launched in 2021, the YMCA said Y on the Fly was created to "bring the YMCA beyond its walls and directly into neighborhoods where children and families need it most."

According to the Stephens Family YMCA, over the past five years, Y on the Fly has:

  • Served 7 neighborhoods
  • Built partnerships with over 14 community organizations
  • Employed more than 50 counselors and staff
  • Served 200+ children through after-school programming
  • Welcomed 360 summer campers
  • Distributed 1,000+ backpacks to local youth
  • Invested more than $1.34 million into the community through programming

"Y on the Fly is a great example of what can happen when a community comes together," Stephens Family YMCA CEO Jeff Scott said. "What started as an idea to bring the YMCA directly into neighborhoods has grown into a program that is changing lives every day. We are grateful to our partners, funders, donors, and families for making these first five years possible, and we're excited for what's ahead."

The YMCA is inviting the community to celebrate the five year milestone on Friday, August 7 from 4-6 p.m. at Y on the Fly, 2422 W. Springfield Ave. The event will celebrate the families, staff, volunteers, donors and community partners whose support has helped Y on the Fly grow each year.
