SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Trick-or-treating looked a little different at the University of Illinois Springfield on Sunday.
UIS students went trick-or-treating in local neighborhoods for canned goods, collecting donations for the UIS Cares Food Pantry.
The event is a decades long tradition. 11 teams consisting of 145 students went door-to-door.
"It is just huge to be able to have the support of the Springfield community to be able to keep these items on campus, to secure donations in our pantry," said UIS Director of Volunteer and Civic Engagement Jill Hawkins.
Students were assigned specific neighborhoods covering about 2,916 homes. The teams previously visited the neighborhoods and put up door hangers explaining the project.
In the end, collected items were weighed and prizes were given to teams that collected the most food. Students also took part in some Halloween fun after dropping off the donations.
"This makes me still feel like I'm a kid," said UIS Junior Trinity Davidson. "We're doing trivia, we're doing little games and everything. That was really the most exciting part, not just collecting the stuff and dropping it off."
