(WAND) —Leaves throughout central Illinois are changing colors providing the perfect backdrop for family photos.

But why do the colors change?

NOAA says as summer fades into fall, the shorter days mean less sunlight. When this happens leaves stop making chlorophyll creating those reds, oranges, and yellows you see.

And are you searching for the perfect backdrop for your Instagram selfies or family photos? Or just a place to enjoy nature without social media? Look no further than the list we have compiled below.

  • Allerton Park and Retreat Center is located in Monticello. The park was built by Robert Allerton in 1900, and in 1946 the property was donated to the University of Illinois. There are multiple trails, including ones accessible with power chairs available for rent. The park is open to the public until sundown daily with the exception of events.
     
  • The Rock Springs Nature Center is located in Decatur. You can even rent or borrow equipment for your nature adventure. There is also a window on wildlife for birdwatchers and photographers to gather and overlook the sites and sounds of wildlife. There are multiple trails as well. The park closes by 5 p.m. daily.
     
  • There are 4.5 miles worth of hiking trails at Fort Daniel Conservation Area in Mt. Zion. There is also a large pavilion, playground, and maps are available by clicking here.
     
  • Weldon Springs State Park is located near Clinton and is a 550 acre park open for all seasons. During mild seasons you can fish, boat, picnic, camp, hike, and view wildlife.
  • Eagle Creek State Park is located near Findlay and has a few marked nature trails, including a 12-mile Illini Trail and a 3 mile cross-country ski trail is available in the winter.
     
  • Carpenter Park is located near Springfield. It features 434 acres with trails for hiking and nature observation. According to their website part of the park is an Illinois Nature Preserve.
     
  • Moraine View State Park is located near LeRoy where nature goers can camp, picnic, hike, boat, or even pursue horseback riding. The 1,678 acre recreation area with a 158 acre lake.
