ARGENTA, Ill. (WAND) - A local Red Cross volunteer is making her way to Alaska amid devastation and rescues occurring in the state.Â
Shari Grider, a volunteer from Argenta, said that her greatest honor is helping people.Â
"There's so many people that I know that I am never going to see them again, but you worry about them. You get to know their stories, and you get to listen to them [and] show them compassion," Grider said.Â
According to the Red Cross, this will be Grider's fourth deployment in the last year. Thousands were forced to evacuate after floodwaters swept entire communities away, after remnants from a typhoon triggered widespread destruction.Â
