SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Eight players and an assistant coach were ejected during the Southeast-Springfield football game Monday night, according to the Springfield School District.Â
The Springfield School District told WAND News that a physical altercation happened after a play, and words were exchanged during the fourth quarter at Southeast High School.Â
The district could not confirm the number of players from each school or which school the coach was from.
The district is waiting on the IHSA to conduct an investigation and make a ruling on how many games the players and coach could be suspended for.Â
The IHSA told WAND that the penalty for an ejection is a one-game suspension for the next game at that same level, but the school could choose to enforce a "more stringent penalty."Â
