DECATUR, Ill. (WAND)- Abbott EMS is attempting to reassure the community after recent concerns about the state of their emergency services in Decatur and Macon County.
Abbott EMS Regional Director Brian Gerth said their organization has faced a series of challenges that made it difficult to maintain adequate staffing.
Gerth said the company finalized a comprehensive staffing strategy to increase the size of their workforce, and hopes to be fully staffed by Thanksgiving at the latest.
Just last week, the Long Creek Fire Protection District announced its plans to expand its services to include EMS within the district, due to what they describe as a "catastrophic failure" of the current EMS provider for Decatur and Macon County.
In a formal statement Gerth addressed Long Creeks remarks with the following statement :
"While we acknowledge the concerns raised and respect the commitment of the Long Creek Fire Protection District to enhance local emergency response, it is essential to provide a broader perspective on the complex challenges affecting all EMS services regionally and nationwide."
Gerth also stated, since taking on EMS service responsibilities in October 2022, Abbott EMS has navigated significant challenges that extend beyond any single organization’s control.
