DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - An man who died after being shot by Decatur Police Monday has been identified.
Macon County Coroner Michael Day said Rocky L. Dupin, 38, was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m. in the operating room at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
An autopsy conducted at the McLean County Coroner's Morgue in Bloomington showed that Dupin died as the result of gunshot trauma to his torso and extremities.
The shooting happened near 600 W. Grand on Monday afternoon just before 4 p.m.
According to Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel, the 38-year-old man, now identified as Dupin, died at the hospital after being shot by two Decatur Police Officers.
Dupin was stopped by officers, since his description matched an armed robbery suspect fro a robbery that took place earlier in the afternoon. A release from DPD said that he ignored commands from the officers and pulled a firearm from his coat during the encounter.
The Decatur Police Department has confirmed that the firearm that was held by a man who had been stopped by police was a "replica style gun" that "appears extremely realistic." Photos of the item will be released at the same time as body camera video.
Dupin was shot by two officers, who have since been placed on administrative duties. The officers were both members of the Community Action Team (CAT).
Neither officer was injured. The incident was captured on body cameras and dash cameras.
Police said that when Dupin was stopped by police, he was with another man and a woman. Both have been interviewed as witnesses to the shooting.
Illinois State Police are handling the investigation.
Chief Brandel said that in the last three and a half years, the department has had seven officer-involved shootings.
