MT. ZION, IL- A fire over the weekend heavily damaged one of Mt. Zion's fire stations and the damage could add up to over $3 million.
Firefighters believe the fire started from an electrical problem in a ladder truck early Saturday morning. When firefighters arrived at the fire house, they tried to get inside to save some trucks and equipment, but the flames and heat were just too intense. Â
The State Fire Marshal is now helping with the investigation. Normally the fire department would handle an investigation into the cause of a fire, but since this fire involves the fire department itself, the State Fire Marshal and the Decatur Fire Department are assisting in looking into the cause.
Mt. Zion Fire Chief Don Wright says the fire was so hot, the front end of the ladder truck melted. A pumper also appears to be lost, along with a pick-up truck that was used as a support vehicle and a command vehicle.
Fire departments in Decatur and Warrensburg have loaned Mt. Zion some vehicles so the fire department can still handle whatever calls happen to come up.
