DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Witches Night Out started as an idea for a girls night out, allowing women the chance to dress up, shop downtown, and enjoy the fall season. But now the event has evolved and expanded to involve every member of the family.

"You'll see so many more businesses, so many more restaurants participating and everyone has their own little spin on it," said Cassie Yoder, Owner of Cass Concepts. "The kids are around and wearing their Halloween costumes, and it's also just a fun night for girlfriends to get together, throw on their holiday costumes and do some shopping."

Yoder opens her space to allow pop up businesses that don't have a permanent spot downtown to still sell their products and connect with customers. Small business owners say events like this help them expand their customer base and make a profit before the holiday season kicks off. Andrea McGee owns T Candles, and used Witches Night Out as an opportunity to sell her sand wax candles.

"It is so very important for me as a small business trying to build my brand and reputation and to connect with other small businesses of the community," said McGee. "The most important thing is learning from each one of these businesses. They all have their, own stories to tell, and it's so unique."

As businesses launch their special decorations and hours, it provides a great opportunity for people to visit places downtown that may not be part of their regular routine. Many of the stores offer activities inside as well, providing families a way to escape the cold and still have fun.

At Decatur Brew Works, people can order their traditional food and snacks or get henna tattoos, face painting, or other tricks and treats.

"Events like this are really great for business here, not just to make money at our own place, but to really partner with the other downtown businesses and show how we are all working together to create a great downtown experience here in Decatur," said Nicky Besser at Decatur Brew Works.
