CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The entry age for Campustown bars in Champaign has temporarily been raised to 21.

Amendment 1 to Emergency Order 20-24, issued Thursday by Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen, sets the entry age to 21 for all establishments in the campus area holding a Class A liquor license. The one exception to this amendment is for campus-area bars that serve food, which can serve food cooked on the premises to customers under 21 until 9 p.m., per a press release.

People under 21 are required to leave the bar either when they finish eating or at 9 p.m., whichever happens first.

The amendment will be active at 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.

Champaign leaders said this emergency order was created to help with social distancing and public safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
