Jarvis Smith Jr. mugshot

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A 21-year-old man arrested for the shooting death of a Decatur man earlier this month was denied pretrial release.

Decatur police said officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 10 a.m. Friday near the intersection of North Poole Street and West Center Street.

Police arrived to find a 23-year-old man, later identified as Deamontae Weaver of Decatur, who had been shot inside a home in the 900 block of W. Center Street. He was taken to the hospital and later died.

Police stated that later that same day, they obtained an arrest warrant for 21-year-old Jarvis Smith Jr. for first-degree murder.

According to a sworn statement of Smith's arrest, the driver of a car at the shooting scene told police that she was meeting a man to buy weed.

After meeting the man at an address on W. Main Street, he came out with two other men who had gotten into her car. She was then directed to pick up a fourth man and drove them to a home on North Edward Street.

The woman said she was told to drive to a separate home on West Center Street to buy the weed instead, according to the sworn.

Shortly after arriving at the new address, the woman heard multiple gunshots coming from inside the home.

According to the sworn statement, she attempted to drive away, and as she did, the passenger in the front seat grabbed the gear shift and put the car back in park.

The woman in her interview identified Smith as the front seat passenger and the one who prevented her from driving away.

Smith will be in custody at the Macon County Jail until his trial.

His next court appearance will be on June 3.

No additional arrests have been made in the shooting as of Wednesday. Decatur police say the investigation is ongoing.
