Police: 2 hospitalized after being attacked with an axe, 1 man arrested

MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - A Mattoon man was arrested Wednesday after police say he attacked two people with an axe.

The Mattoon Police Department responded to a report of two people being attacked by Matthew Estes, 50, of Mattoon. 

The victims told police Estes was at their home when he began attacking them with an axe and a chair. 

Both victims are stable and receiving treatment at local hospitals. 

Estes was not present when police arrived, but was taken into custody later without incident. 

Estes was transported to the Coles County Detention Center.
