Effingham Police

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) — A large police presence in west Effingham is tied to an active investigation, but authorities say there is no danger to the public.

The Effingham Police Department, working alongside the Effingham County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police, are investigating an incident near Jefferson Avenue and North Cherry St.

Officials are asking the public to avoid the area while investigators process the scene, although there are no road closures in place.

St. John's Luthern Church shared on its Facebook page just after 10 a.m., "You can thank the Lord. Everyone at St. John’s is safe. 10:30 Service is cancelled."

Authorities say the investigation indicates the incident was isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Illinois State Police have taken over as the lead investigative agency, with the Effingham Police Department continuing to assist.

No additional information has been released. WAND News will update this story as more details become available.
