CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The University of Illinois police department has gotten reports of 10 attempted car thefts dating back to April 16.

UIPD first sent out a campus safety alert on Thursday, May 1. The email said that officers received 4 reports from UIUC students in regards to car break-ins between April 16 and May 1 at 302 E. John St. in Champaign.

Police say the cars had their back windows damaged and steering systems tampered with. Some of the cars also had items stolen from them.

On Friday, May 2, UIPD sent out another safety update saying they got 6 more reports of attempted car thefts on Friday morning.

These happened in the 2000 blocks of South Orchard Street and Hazelwood Court in Urbana.

These break-ins were similar to the ones described in the first safety notice. All of the cars that were broken into were either Kias or Hyundais.

Anyone with information is asked to contact university police.

This is an ongoing investigation.
