DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Over the course of two days, there have been three shootings in Decatur, one of which resulted in the death of a 54-year-old man who was shot multiple times Monday on N Church St.
"We take them all very seriously. We're dedicating our resources to try to work on all three of them simultaneously," said Decatur Chief of Police Brad Allen.Â
Â
Monday night, Decatur police responded to a call where a 20-year-old man was shot in his right leg. Police said the victim's statements were inconsistent. Similarly, police responded to a call on Labor Day, where a 54-year-old man was shot. After being transported to the hospital, the victim died from his injuries. Then, Tuesday morning, DPD responded to yet another shooting where a 48-year-old man was shot twice in the chest.Â
Â
"That subject that was shot attempted to enter the home of a person that I don't think they thought that person was going to be home, and that person was armed as a citizen protecting their property," Allen said.Â
Â
Residents in the area of the shootings asked not to be on camera, but many expressed the fear of gun violence in their neighborhoods. Others said they were extremely saddened that the 54-year-old man was killed.Â
Â
Allen said his department wants to "share information with the community, be transparent, let them know what's going on so that we can ease some of that fear that might be out there. Let them know that we're dedicating all of our resources, and we're working every angle and every lead we can on all three of these to try to come to resolutions."Â
Â
No arrests have been made for any of the shootings, and investigations are still ongoing.
Â
The department emphasized that the community can assist in investigations by sharing information they know, and urged them to contact DPD or Crime Stoppers.
