Race Chapman & Angela Powell

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A Decatur woman has entered a plea deal after two dogs were found dead in her home.

Angela Powell, 28, was arrested along with Race Chapman, 24, on May 29. Decatur police were originally called to the home in the 1000 block of West Decatur St. for a reported burglary.

Police found two dead dogs in the house. They died from traumatic neck injuries.

According to a sworn statement of their arrest, two huskies, Thor and Butterball, were left on their leash for an extended period. Both dogs later died.

The suspects told police the dogs were killed during "a break-in," but police said evidence shows the dogs had been living in poor conditions for some time.

Police also said the couple failed to provide "adequate" food and water to several cats and dogs. The surviving animals were voluntarily relinquished to Macon County Animal Control by the owners.

Powell pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal neglect and had two charges of animal cruelty dropped. She was sentenced to a year of probation and is banned from owning any pets during that period.
