DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur Public Schools Board of Education updated the change in graduation requirements, increasing the necessary credits.
Starting with the class of 2028, students will be required to earn 24 credits, instead of 22. The change does not add any additional credit hours to students' schedules, since most students accumulate a total of 28 credits before graduating. The district has created additional electives to help earn these credits.
Edwin Robinson, Director of Teaching and Learning at DPS, said raising the requirements will help students be better prepared for their lives after graduation.
"We're raising the bar for students. We're now on skill with districts of comparable size and close proximity. And we're ensuring that every student that leaves DPS is well equipped when they leave for the next chapter of their lives," Robinson said.
