(WAND) - Parents spoke out at a Sangamon Valley School Board meeting on Wednesday, asking for an investigation into the death of 12-year-old Kaitlynn Eller.

Eller took her own life in late January, which her family said was a result of bullying by other students.

Community members called on the board to investigate her death and the middle school's action to protect her.

One parent said they hope to learn if enough was done.

"Move forward in a way that allows us to prevent any future tragedies such as that of Kaitlynn Nicole Eller, who is now forever 12, and always in our hearts. I don't know what enough is, and we won't know until a full investigation has been conducted," said Sarah Van Kirkley, parent of a Sangamon Valley middle school student.

WAND News also spoke to Corbin Franklin, a student who said he knew Eller. Franklin said they ate lunch in the school's office because of the bullying they had experienced, but encouraged other students to be strong.

"For those out there that are like me that get bullied all the time, and their teachers aren't doing enough, you have to push through like I have been trying to push through," Franklin said.

Members of the Sangamon County School Board declined to comment as they look into the case.

A petition calling on the board to investigate is online.
