JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - The Jacksonville Fire Department was called out for a huge fire at a vacant apartment building early Thursday morning.Â
The historic building on West State Street in downtown Jacksonville caught fire just before 6 a.m.Â
Firefighters searched the three-story building and found no one inside.Â
JFD tells WAND News the fire is considered to be under control as of 8:30 a.m., but it is still an active scene with firefighters working on hot spots.Â
It is a stand alone structure, and firefighters said no neighboring buildings are at risk.Â
The Jacksonville Fire Department said that the building will be scheduled for demolition. It was deemed unsafe due to years of damage and the threat of safety to the public and nearby buildings.Â
The department is investigating the cause of the fire.
