SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — On Thursday, the Springfield Fire Department unveiled its new state-of-the-art station facilities to the public.
Station #6 is located near the intersection of 11th and Ash Streets.
Mayor Misty Buscher of Springfield told WAND news this improvement changes things for the better,
"This station house is exceptionally different because-- and Alderman Gregory will tell you it's in his ward, that's why-- but also because there is a substation for Springfield police here, and then we have a community room that Director Posey's gonna be in charge of as well that some of the neighborhood groups can use so it's a very different station house than the other two we've opened up."
SFD Chief Ed Canny told WAND News the new station embodies the department's commitment to the safety and welfare of the city's residents.
The new station has a modern design to improve firefighter safety and the station's response time.
There is also a community room, which Canny said will be used to educate the public.
And meet the newest member of the Springfield Fire Department, Ozzy.
The four-legged crew member has been trained as an ignitable liquids detection K9.
SFD Chief Clint Warnisher is Ozzy's handler.
