DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A Decatur nonprofit that once faced the possibility of closing its doors has now reached a major milestone, thanks to an outpouring of community support.

The Good Samaritan Inn announced it has exceeded its $410,000 fundraising goal. That donation goal was set to help sustain operations and avoid potential closure.

The organization, which has served the community for more than four decades, previously warned it needed to raise more than $400,000 to continue providing daily meals and services to neighbors facing food insecurity.

“This achievement is a true testament to what is possible when a community refuses to let its neighbors go hungry,” said Executive Director Tanya Melendez. “But it's more than just a number. It reflects the meals served, the strengthened partnerships, and the lives touched by our collective efforts.”

The fundraising effort drew support from individuals, businesses, foundations, and community leaders across central Illinois. Melendez also credited board members, volunteers, and staff who work daily to ensure anyone in need has access to a meal.

For more than 43 years, the Good Samaritan Inn has been a staple in Decatur, offering daily meals and additional support through programs like urban agriculture and community partnerships aimed at strengthening the local food system.

While the milestone marks a significant victory, leaders say the need in the community remains. Many families still face uncertainty about where their next meal will come from, and the organization plans to continue building partnerships and seeking resources to meet that demand.

“But today, we celebrate — a joyful reminder that compassion is one of the most powerful forces in our community,” Melendez said. “With your continued support, we will keep building a community where every neighbor knows they have a place at the table.”

The organization says the success of this campaign not only secures its immediate future but also reinforces the community’s commitment to ensuring no one in Decatur goes hungry.
