SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker called for the resignation of the Sangamon Co. Sheriff over the police shooting death of Sonya Massey.

Pritzker, a Democrat, called for Republican Jack Campbell to resign his position in a statement on Tuesday.

"We join the Massey family in calling for Sheriff Campbell's resignation immediately so the Springfield and Sangamon County community can begin to rebuild and restore trust between citizens and the sheriff's department," Pritzker said in a statement.

Campbell has refused to resign on multiple occasions, including in a one-on-one interview with WAND News last week.

Massey was shot and killed on July 6 inside her Springfield home after calling 911 to report a possible prowler. Police body camera video from the the night of the shooting shows now former deputy Sean Grayson pulling out his weapon and shooting Massey. Grayson is facing several charges, including first-degree murder in Massey's death.

Grayson was fired from the department after being indicted by a grand jury last month.

Grayson worked for six departments in four years. Personnel files obtained by WAND News show several of Grayson's former leaders said he needed more training and lacked safety skills. References in the files indicated Grayson's lack of experience is why he needed additional training.

Pritzker's statement also indicated Campbell has refused to meet with the Massey family. But Campbell told WAND news he has reached out several times to the family to meet but his requests have been denied.

Pritzker also took aim at Campbell's lack of specific reforms for his department and what changes he may implement. The governor said suspicion has grown leading to the possibility of independent investigations including the possibility the U.S. Department of Justice may get involved.

In a statement Wednesday morning, Campbell said he's willing to change his hiring practices but said changes may be necessary at the state level also. Campbell has defended the hiring of Grayson saying a state agency previously certified his hiring as a law enforcement officer on multiple occasions.

"Calls for my resignation are nothing more than political maneuvering during a tragic event and only hurt the good citizens of Sangamon County."

Pritzker, several members of the Sangamon County Board, members of the public, and others have called for Campbell to resign.

Campbell was re-elected sheriff in 2022.
