SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Fireworks at the Springfield City Council on Tuesday night regarding a proposed BOS Center expansion and hotel project.
Sen. Doris Turner filed a bill to create a capital area tourism authority.
Visit Springfield said the BOS Center expansion would allow the venue to continue hosting conventions and meetings while also offering shows, concerts and musical acts.
"Their space is booked with these meetings and conventions. So when you're trying to hit a music act on their way to a metro city, and you can have them here on a Wednesday or Thursday night, it's already booked," said Visit Springfield Director Scott Dahl.
The tourism authority's board would consist of three members appointed by the Sangamon County Board, one by the Springfield City Council and one by the Springfield Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority (SMEAA).
Some aldermen expressed concern for the city's lack of representation.
"They're trying to circumvent the City of Springfield lawmakers in order to get this big behemoth of a project done," said Ward 6 Councilmember Jennifer Notariano.
A few aldermen introduced a resolution supporting the project, but it would require Turner to amend her bill, allowing more city control.
However, council amended the resolution to support Turner's bill as written.
