SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State lawmakers are heading home for the week after their first two days of veto session. The House and Senate were scheduled to work Thursday, but Democratic leaders canceled their sessions.

House Republicans told reporters in Springfield Wednesday that Illinois families desperately deserve and need change from their lawmakers. Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) said Democrats need to stop the tax hikes and radical agenda to help people most in need.

"The voters are very unhappy and part of that is how our taxpayer dollars are spent," McCombie said. "There is no reason for us to be here if we're not going to be doing proactive work."

House GOP leaders said lawmakers should be focused on improving the cost of living for every Illinoisan.

The House and Senate will return to the capitol for three days of veto session next week.
