Farm, soybean harvesting

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Illinois Department of Agriculture is relaunching its I-COVER Program to help farmers adopt cover crops and improve soil health across the state.

Backed by a $7 million grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the three-year program offers financial incentives to producers who are new to cover crops or using new methods to plant them earlier. The program will cover planting seasons in 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Officials say the program was paused last year due to uncertainty around federal funding but is now moving forward after coordination with federal partners. Previous applicants will need to reapply.

“Cover crops strengthen soil health, reduce erosion, and improve resilience during drought,” said Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II.

Pre-enrollment opens April 1, with applications accepted starting April 15 through May 1. Funding will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis by county.

State officials say the program is part of ongoing efforts to protect Illinois farmland and promote long-term sustainability.
