SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Illinois State Dental Society is warning of a rise in unlicensed dental professionals working across the state. ISDS is working with the Pritzker administration to spread awareness about the real risk of going to a fake dentist.

IDFPR leaders said patients need to pay attention to licensing, office environment, payment practices and the quality of dental equipment.

Dental health is critical for daily life, but some Illinois patients have reported their dentists after struggling with chipped teeth, infections and permanent damage.

The Illinois State Dental Society told reporters Thursday that unlicensed dental treatments can be very dangerous. ISDS leaders say the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is helping them teach people about red flags.

"I want Illinois to understand that unregulated and unlicensed dental care is a huge problem and it is a dangerous risk," said Dr. Sherece Thompson. "You are gambling with a person's oral health and there is no procedure that is safe when done by someone who does not have proper training in oral health."

Fake dentists often work in unsafe conditions and lack proper training. IDFPR leaders said patients need to pay attention to licensing, office environment, payment practices and the quality of dental equipment.

"Many operate under the table or outside of the regulatory system through word of mouth of social media," said ISDS Executive Director Eric Larson. "They're not licensed. They did not attend dental school and are putting patients at risk."

State officials also stressed that people should not wait to report suspicious activity. Anyone can file a complaint for unlicensed dental work by going to the IDFPR website.

"Unfortunately, scammers are becoming increasingly creative in their efforts to deceive the people of Illinois and take their hard earned money," said IDFPR Secretary Mario Treto Jr. "We are responding with creativity of our own by launching this campaign."
