SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A 13-year-old boy was hurt after crashing into a pickup truck on his motorbike in Springfield Tuesday.

According to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, officers responded to the intersection of North Daniel Avenue and East Carpenter Street just after 4 p.m. for reports of a crash.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the 13-year-old boy was riding a motorbike through the intersection when he crashed into a pickup truck.

The boy was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt.

The sheriff's office said witness statements and evidence collected at the scene showed that the motorbike did not stop at the stop sign, and the pickup driver tried to slow down but was not able to avoid hitting the bike.

The 13-year-old was given a citation for disregarding a stop sign. The motorbike was a 99cc vehicle, which does not require registration, licensing or insurance under Illinois law.

Investigators said they determined that the boy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
