SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - On East Washington Street in downtown Springfield is one of the few remaining places where you can find the art of clock repair. Christopher Crothers, the owner, is dedicated to his craft.
"I love to fix things; this is my happy place," Chris says with enthusiasm.
At the Springfield Clock Shop, clocks adorn the walls, creating an atmosphere where time seems to stand still.
"Equal parts patience and stubbornness," he explains, describing his approach to clock repair.
Many of the clocks he works on are family heirlooms that have managed to endure through the years.
"I handle every type of clock—anniversary clocks, cuckoo clocks, grandfather clocks, mantle clocks, ship bell clocks, and battery-operated clocks," Chris shares.
Some clocks present more challenges than others. "Cuckoo clocks are generally the hardest; they are smaller, often mass-produced, and each clock brings its own unique challenges."
Chris has even worked on some of the oldest clocks, dating back to the late 1700s, including a few wooden gear clocks from the early 1800s.
Interestingly, the average age of a horologist is around 70. "So in a few years, there won't be many left, which creates a big opportunity for someone like me," Chris notes.
His training comes from Gem City College in Quincy.
He has a good sense of humor and appreciates a reliable partner to help pass the time.
"Yeah, as clock makers, we spend most of our time repairing what time has done to timepieces," he adds with a smile.
